Before the G.U. series begins, the .hack// universe is about to go online. You'll be able to create a character from one of the 6 main classes shown throughout the first four games. There will not be a monthly fee, however no dedicated servers either. Much like PSO the only real server-stuff provided are Root Towns where you'll be able to meet up with people to go adventuring with. Once your group goes off into a field & dungeon you'll actually be playing from either your or theirs host PC. And yes, this is a PS2 game...just complicated. What's more is you'll be given field/dungeon creation tools so that you can make your own! Additionally there will be an offline mode where you'll be able to level up your character alongside heroes from the games, anime & books! This should be interesting.
