Sigma Hidden Forbidden Sin Realm
The Forest of Pain... well... It... It feels like it's been years since I was here...
This is it. The final abyss quest. Your suggested level of entry is 135. While the Forest of Pain takes place in a "forest" style dungeon there are notable differences. The sky is dark, the trees have no leaves, mushrooms and flowers are blue, swinging pedulums replace bear traps in the halls while cannons replace Chim Bombers in trap rooms. Even the music is different. Upon entering the first room you'll come across some monsters you may not have seen in a very long time. Please be aware... they've been buffed up and won't be as weak as they were outside of the forest...
Rules & Restrictions
About Phase Bonuses:
"Every phase, or five blocks, in the Forest of Pain is given a Phase Bonus. If you complete its conditions, you will receive a special item. Phase Bonuses will be displayed in the first block of each phase, and can be checked by pressing the X button on the full map."
To see whether or not you've completed a Phase Bonus, press Select then X. It will list the condition(s) for the current phase and if you've completed it, you will see a red circle button icon.
About restrictions on Item Storage
"In the Forest of Pain, you may store items and exchange them for GP, but you may not take them out."
In other words: come prepared. Make sure you have plenty of high level HP & SP restoring items on hand because you cannot pull them out of storage. The same goes for customized equipment / customization items you feel may be helpful. An accessory with the Boost Candle attached to it will be of great use to.
About Neo Platform
"On this type of Platform, you may choose Party from the menu to edit your party."
After five or more blocks you may find yourself wanting to switch party members and with these special platforms you can do that without leaving and re-entering the forest! This is especially useful during the second half of this quest where you cannot leave the area.
Between Phases
Each block ending in a 0 or 5 contains a boss-class monster. You cannot use the Smoke Screen / Bomb items in these blocks. Bosses will see and pull you into battle before you even pass through the doorway. You can only sneak by a boss if you have the Demons Safe Shoes or any accessory with a Cat Whiskers attached to it equipped, but you'll still have to fight them. You'll also find Save Points and Neo Platforms in these blocks.
Other Recommendations
- You'll want as much item space as possible so completing the Lucky Data and Bikman's Flyer campaigns before getting too deep into the forest is a good idea. This will free up space taken up by the Animal Radar and Flyer Radar.
- Although the suggested level of entry is L135, L150 may be a better bet. There's plenty to do to 100% the game so getting stuff like obtaining all the area words, maxing the Ryu Books, and so on. By the time that's all done you'll certainly be L150 anyhow!
- When faced with Combo or Skill Trigger conditions, keep the L1 button held in so your party members won't attack and potentially defeat monsters until you've completed the condition. Another thing for Combo ones is to use your regular Dual Gun attacks from far enough away that you do only 1 damage to a monster.
- For Awakening conditions have an accessory with the Battle Cosmetics item attached, equipped. This helps to fill the morale guage faster. Having party members that like combos such as Pi, Silabus, and Yata are good to have on hand. Using items and skills on members helps to. Beast and Demon awakenings can be used when the morale guage is half full so definetely use those over the Avatar awakening.
- The "be KO'd # times or less" condition isn't just for Haseo. It counts all party member deaths. Make sure they're well equipped and leveled! Heal them yourself if you see their HP is getting low.
- Monsters with no weaknesses in Phase 18 & 20 (save for the final boss) cannot be harmed by physical attacks. You'll need to use magical skills to take their HP down, or build up your morale guage and use Beast Awakening.
By the way...
Aside from story related bosses, monsters here do not drop items or money. Since you cannot take items out of storage, you'll have to rely on Mushrooms (MS), Treasure Boxes (TB), and Trapped Treasure Boxes (TpB) for item drops (there is no Anomolous Data). You may also run into other player characters with whom you can chat and trade with as always. Oh and there will be Chim Sphere farming, plus Chim Assassins will show up from time to time as they do in regular dungeons.

Intermission
In the first room of Block 50 you'll finally re-unite with Tabby! Her and Haseo will do some catching up. However if Shino is in your party the conversation will steer towards Ovan and the Twilight Brigade. After all is said and done, she'll logout and you'll find you have an important e-mail waiting.
Before that defeat the boss so that Block 50 is now a starting point from the chaos gate. This is important because Block 50 is the last shortcut. Which means you'll have to do 51-100 without returning to town. So this is a good point to go back to town, check your e-mail, restock on items, make sure you have space in your inventory and storage, and so on.
By the way did you notice monsters are starting to get stronger? If you were skipping enemy parties up until now maybe you didn't. But with new and more involved Phase Bonus conditions you won't be able to skip by as many of them as before... and is it just me, or is the sky getting darker?

Epilogue
"And... to the new future."
Once the True Cernunnos is defeated Haseo will be transported to the true final area of the forest like he was in .hack//Roots. You'll now be treated to the series epilogue. What Haseo finds is similar yet different from before. After that is over with it cuts to the final cutscene of the game with Haseo and Shino chatting in Mac Anu. Then a congratulations screen shows up stating you've completed all episodes of .hack//G.U.!
Notes
- Completing this quest will unlock the final desktop wallpaper and viewable cutscene!
- MS = Mushroom | TB = Treasure Box | TpB = Trapped Treasure Box
- The item finds I listed are what I got on my journey through the forest. Although items are random it seems like multiple blocks draw from the same pool of potential items.
- Did you notice? Block 30, 50, 70, and 100 are special as they are all story related. Their numbers also correspond with the area level caps of .hack//Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, and Quarantine (well Quarantine's was 99 but still).
